HMS Powerful was the lead ship of her class of two protected
cruisers built for the Royal Navy in the 1890s. She was initially
assigned to the China Station and then provided landing parties which
fought in the Siege of Ladysmith of 1899–1900 during the Second Boer
War.
Matsushima class was a class of protected cruisers of the Imperial Japanese Navy.
The Matsushima class was a highly unorthodox design among cruisers of the 1890s, in that each ship had a primary armament of a single massive 320 millimetres (13 in) Canet gun, resulting in a monitor-like appearance.
