Navarin (Russian: Наварин) was a pre-dreadnought battleship built for the Imperial Russian Navy in the late 1880s and early 1890s. At the beginning of the Russo-Japanese War in February 1904, she was assigned to the 2nd Pacific Squadron to relieve the Russian forces blockaded in Port Arthur. During the Battle of Tsushima in May 1905, she was sunk by Japanese destroyers which spread twenty-four linked mines across her path during the night. Navarin struck two of these mines and capsized with the loss of most of her crew.

Oryol (Russian: Орёл) was a Borodino-class battleship built for the Russian Imperial Navy in the first decade of the 20th century.
Oryol was badly damaged during the Battle of Tsushima in May 1905 and surrendered to the Japanese who put her into service under the name of Iwami.
Reconstructed by the Japanese in 1905–1907, Iwami was reclassified by the Imperial Japanese Navy as a coastal defence ship in 1912.
Iwami was used as a training ship beginning in September 1921.
The ship was disarmed in 1922 to comply with the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty and sunk as a target ship.
Cruiser Zhemchug (Russian: Жемчуг, “Pearl”) was the second of the two-vessel Izumrud class of protected cruisers built for the Imperial Russian Navy. She was at the Battle of Tsushima, where she survived. She was sunk during World War I by the German light cruiser Emden in the Battle of Penang.
Sissoi Veliky (Russian: Сисой Великий) was a pre-dreadnought battleship built for the Imperial Russian Navy in the 1890s.
Sissoi Veliky sailed for the Far East with the rest of the Baltic battleships and participated in the Battle of Tsushima on May 27 1905, where she was sunk.

The special effects were supervised by Eiji Tsuburaya who was renowned for his work in numerous 1950s and 1960s Japanese horror and Science Fiction films. Tsuburaya and his special effects team created 136 ship models for Storm Over the Pacific.
