@aber-flyingtiger If memory serves the Thunderchild was described as an ironclad in the book. I imagined her much differently than these illustrations. I think the side wheeler comes closest, but they’re still pretty neat.
Actually, she wasn’t. HMS Thunder Child is a torpedo ram, one with an ironclad hull. Although it doesn’t help that H.G. Wells’ description of her doesn’t really match with any known torpedo ram or ironclad that existed in the Royal Navy at the time.
The closest anyone has come to an actually accurate rendition of Wells’ description would be the artists Drachinifel and Baron Engel:
