1860’s ITALIAN BERSAGLIERI by hliguy
Via Flickr:
This is a 7 ½" x 10" photo mounted on a larger photo mount board that was taken in the 1860’s. The photo features a dashing looking Italian soldier of an elite Bersaglieri (sharpshooter) regiment. These are the troops who jogged by a review stand with their rifles at slope. I believe that the insignia on his sleeve is a sharpshooter badge. The photo type is the same as that of CDV’s and later cabinet photos, a thin paper photo. The mount itself is only a bit thicker than that of an early CDV, but thinner than a cabinet photo. I was lucky enough to find this photo at a book and paper show in Dallas, Texas back in the 1980’s.
