“The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the Eighth Dimension” (1984).
Maybe one of the most quotable movies of all time. It was ahead of its’ time: it was a surreal comedy-adventure-scifi film when that was a truly bizarre combination (nowadays, there are a lot of films like that) and the “joke” is that it was Part 6 or something in a movie series that no other films exist in, so it has a lot of “hey, look, it’s that guy!” moments to people that we the audience never saw before. The whole thing has the weird feel of a private joke among friends, and the worldbuilding gave you the same feel the Marvel movies later did, that there was “more going on” than what is strictly happening on screen.
