Two Federal Soldiers Enjoying a Card Game and Whiskey.
Colonel Robert Gould Shaw,
commander first all-black regiment in the US Army, the 54th Massachusetts. Killed at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner, Charleston, South Carolina, the Confederates buried him in a mass grave with African-American soldiers as an
insult for leading black soldiers. The Union army tried to recover his
body, but his father sent a letter saying “We would not have his body
removed from where it lies surrounded by his brave and devoted soldiers.”
