The Chukchi are an indigenous people inhabiting the Chukchi Peninsula, shores of the Chukchi Sea and the Bering Sea region of the Arctic Ocean within the Russian Federation.

Today, only a very small portion of the population of around 16,000 continue to practice traditional methods of subsistence such as reindeer herding and sea mammal hunting.

The traditional home of the Chukchi is the Yaranga, an easily moveable, rounded tent made from reindeer hide. A medium-sized Yaranga requires about 50 reindeer skins for construction.
