US Model 1913 Cavalry Sword, a.k.a. “Patton Saber”
Model 1913 Patton Saber, complete with scabbard, straps, and picket pin, in leather sheath, marked “US” over eaglehead proof on one side of ricasso; “LF&C” (Landers, Frary & Clark) on other. The last functional saber issued to the U.S. Cavalry, designed by then Lt. George S. Patton after his return from the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm. At the Mounted Service School in Ft. Reilly, KS, Patton was given the prestigious title of “Master of the Sword”. It was at this time he designed the M.1913 saber, which some say is influenced by the British Army’s 1908 & 1912 pattern Cavalry sword.
I would also add that it was probably influenced by the Swedish M1893 Cavalry Sword, which has a similar double-edged thrusting blade. Patton could have seen examples of this model when he was in Stockholm for the Olympics in 1912.
