Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Running Fence, 1976

RUNNING FENCE (1978)

This iconic piece of land art was 24.5 miles long, running across the hills of California’s Sonoma and Marin counties. The project, in place for only 14 days, required over 4 years preparation, including 18 public hearings, 3 court sessions, and a 450 page Environmental Impact Report. It was funded by Christo and Jeanne-Claude themselves, through the sale of art works, and was the subject of this film by legendary documentarians the Maysles brothers (known also for Gimme Shelter and Grey Gardens).
