California (BB-44) receiving a new coat of anti-foul on her lower hull
in dry dock. The outer door of one of her torpedo tubes can be seen
below the waterline forward of Turret I. A four-star admiral’s flag
flies from the main topmast, which would indicate this was when she was
either flagship of the US Fleet or of the Pacific Battle Force. This
image was taken in the early 1930s; her topmasts were reduced and her fighting tops modified after 1935’s fleet exercises.
