Barranquilla, May 5 2021, a crowd of protesters (referred as students by the cameraman) get surrounded by riot police after they began attacking a mall during the ongoing Colombian protest against a major tax reform.
How bad was that tax reform?
Absolutely fucking horrendous, all sorts of new taxes to food and water, utilities and gasoline, the need to pay income taxes if it was beyond 2 million pesos (600 dollars), effectively an effort to further fuck over the middle class, all the while more tax relief was to be given to major companies, to the point sodas were no longer to be taxed, as to further enrich the higher classes, and all to almost no benefits to the poor, effectively just continuing the meager relief programs launched during the pandemic.
It’s been cancelled, but they also tried to follow it with a healthcare reform that effectively privatized everything, and that made the already mad people even madder, so now new protests are emerging over stuff already in place that remains highly unpopular, like gasoline prices and an earlier healthcare reform that effectively made it mandatory to demand compensation before treatment, forcing everyone to get into healthcare providers or just die at the gates of hospitals.
