A tampon TN gas mask, with its triangular waterproof canvas pouch and rounded tin. It is accompanied by two Meyrowitz gas goggles, an evolution of the previous civilian driving glasses used in that role, made by the same company.
Next to it is an M2 gas mask, the first general issue full mask of the French army. It fits a larger pouch and a rectangular tin, but is otherwise very similar to the previous TN and goggles combination, with both of them using castor oil and néociane to fight combat gases. The M2 would prove one of the best design of the war from December 1915 to mid-1917, when new gases made it obsolete and prompted the development of the German-influenced ARS.
