The Spanish Civil Guard is once again arresting Catalan people who are accused of calling for demonstrations and encouraging peaceful civil disobedience in favour of Catalonia’s independence.
So far (it’s 10 am as I’m writing this post) they have arrested the editor Oriol Soler, the history professor Josep Lluís Alay, and the former politicians David Madí and Xavier Vendrell.
The Civil Guard expects to arrest today around 20 people and raid 30 private homes, offices and warehouses, as published by Spanish media.
The UN’s Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has repeatedly warned Spain to stop doing this, but they don’t stop. Arbitrary detention is when they arrest random people from a specific ideology or who attended a protest, not because these people did anything wrong but to make everyone of their ideology be scared to express their believes or attend protests because this might happen to them. And it’s exactly what they’re doing now.
Update (10:24 am): Xavier Vinyals, Roc Aguilera and Pilar Contreras have also been arrested by the Spanish Civil Guard in the same operation against the pro-independence movement.
The Spanish Civil Guard have confirmed the detention of 21 pro-independence supporters today.
They have called this “operation Vólkhov”. This is the name of a battle fought by the División Azul (“blue division”), the legion that Francoist Spain sent to help Hitler’s Nazi Germany during the Second World War, who fought in the Eastern Front (USSR). Everyone knows the Spanish police forces and especially the Civil Guard are filled with fascists, but you’d expect them to hide it a bit more 🙄
Apparently, the aim of this operation is to linking the pro-independence movement with Snowden, Assange and the Russian government. Spanish ultraconservative media are already saying that Russia offered military help to Catalonia for when we declared independence. These claims have no basis at all and make no sense, but we’ve seen for the past years how Spanish media can say all sorts of false claims against the Catalan independence movement or Catalonia in general with no repercussions, without even having to say sorry when all those claims are proven false.
And I guess that’s where they got the name for the operation, linking Russia with Catalonia, and so the USSR, and Spain fighting against it.
So there is now an operation of the Spanish Civil Guard (Spain’s military police) dedicated at arresting political dissidents from a national minority and making up false claims about them, literally named after a fascist army unit sent to help Hitler. Okay. This time it was the police itself who made a comparison.

And what’s worse is that neonazis never have to face the legal consequences, because the Spanish government supports them.
In the group of neonazis that murdered Guillem Agulló, most never even went to jail since murdering a Catalan/Valencian is not considered a hate crime even when the aggressors clearly say that is the reason. And the ones in the group of murderers who did went to prison were released early for “good behaviour”.
Meanwhile, pro-independence activists like Jordi Sànchez and Jordi Cuixart have already spent 2 years in prison for “organising” (they didn’t even organise it) a peaceful demonstration. And they are sentenced to 9 more years in prison.
Spain is a fascist state. And Catalonia wants no part in it. We are leaving.
