Izumo was the lead ship of her class of armored cruisers built for the Imperial Japanese Navy in the late 1890s.
The Izumo-class cruisers (出雲型装甲巡洋艦, Izumo-gata sōkōjun’yōkan) were a pair of armored cruisers built for the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) in the late 1890s. As Japan lacked the industrial capacity to build such warships herself, the vessels were built in Britain.

The Giuseppe Garibaldi-class cruisers were a class of ten armored cruisers built in Italy in the 1890s and the first decade of the 20th century. The ships were built for both the Royal Italian Navy (Regia Marina) and for export.
