That actually reminds me of the History of Rome podcast, the guy seemed fairly convinced that the reason the Roman Empire became so unstable is that a few leaders started bypassing established laws and custim, which opened the way for more and more bullshit by their descendants until you had five emperors a year and the preatorian selling the empire to the highest bidder.
