According to an American volunteer in the Abraham Lincoln brigade, Hemingway showed up at their trench with a bunch of VIPs. He slapped everyone on the back & said what great time they must having. He then fired off a belt of machine gun ammo, & took off before the mortor barrage he provoked began.
